Legendary punk – crooner Vic Godard brings the Subway Sect to Scotland for a couple of shows on Fri / Sat November 14th / 15th. The Sexual Objects are special guests on both dates, whilst The Leopards are also on the bill for the Glasgow show.
The Subway Sect will be playing a set covering all aspects of Vic’s career, from the early punk material through the northern soul and crooner periods. There will also be a few new songs, which will hopefully see the light of day on record next year.
The Sexual Objects is Davy Henderson’s new group, they release their 3rd 7” single on 17th Nov on Hamburg’s Aufgeladen und Bereit label. “Here Come The Rubber Cops” was produced by Boards of Canada, and will feature on the Objects debut album, which will be released next year.
The Leopards make a rare live outing with fellow Postcard Records alums Vic and Davy. The Leopards 2nd album is nearly finished and should be released next year, only 10 years after their debut album appeared.
VIC GODARD & the SUBWAY SECT
The 7th of May, 1977: This is the date when everything changed forever, as the Clash’s “White Riot” tour hit Edinburgh. However, it wasn’t the Clash that connected with a bunch of teenage punks in the audience who would go on to form the fulcrum of “the Sound of Young Scotland”; it was Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. Their ramshackle grey-glare/treble-to-the-max guitar sound was THE major influence on Postcard Records’ Orange Juice & Josef K, and Fast Product’s Fire Engines.
In the 1990s, Vic Godard reignited his Scottish connection when he signed to the rescusitated Postcard Records for the Edwyn Collins produced “End of the Surrey People”. This Scottish connection continued when Vic hooked up with the Creeping Bent Organisation in 1999 to release a 7”, “Place We Used To Live”. Vic started working with Creeping Bent outfit The Leopards around this time, this resulted in some of his best recordings and gigs. His 1998 performance at Glasgow’s CCA, where he headlined a Creeping Bent event that also featured Adventures in Stereo and The Secret Goldfish, was truly legendary.
Vic has also worked with Irvine Welsh, on a musical called “Blackpool”. He is also in the process of working on a new album with the Subway Sect.
The Sexual Objects is Fire Engines and The Nectarine No9 alum Davy Henderson’s brand new trip. Two secret 7” singles have been released with a minimum of fuss on Creeping Bent (“Full Penetration”) and Aufgeladen und Bereit (“Merrie England”).
The Sexual Objects are about to release a third 7” single, again on Aufgeladen und Bereit. “Here Come The Rubber Cops” was produced by the Boards of Canada, and is released on 17th November. The collaboration is one that will continue, with plans for an album in the pipeline.
The List : “the best rock n’ roll band on this or any other planet”
THE LIST review of The Sexual Objects
New Breed @ The Vic Café, Glasgow School of Art, Sat 7 Jun
‘Play it a bit more Todd Rungren, baby.’ Not words you hear at every art school hop, but it’s what Fire Engines / The Nectarine No 9 guitarist and guiding light Davy Henderson drawls to drummer Ian Holford after stopping a song just a few notes in on this, The Sexual Objects’ low-key live debut.
Suited and booted for the occasion, Henderson, Holford, guitarist Simon Smeeton and bassist/Creeping Bent guru Douglas MacIntyre – a classic quartet, Nectarine survivors all – serve up six perfectly crafted vignettes with cool-handed brio. From sex-on-legs single ‘Full Penetration’ and its flip ‘Boycow’ to low-slung slow burner ‘Merrie England,’ a frighteningly assured amalgam of freakbeat garage glam and east coast cool ensues.
Laced with a side order of four-part doo-wop, it duly causes a pair of polka-dotted divas to wig out awhile. Which, with electronic dreamscapers Boards of Canada on production duties for the next record, proves Henderson and co are still the best rock’n’roll band on this or any other planet.
The LEOPARDS
The Leopards originally emerged from the shadows of Paul Quinn and The Independent Group, and indeed made their live debut at Postcard Records Fin de Siecle club, supporting The Nectarine No. 9 with a performance that was truly end of the century. The Leopards were the first group to appear at the Creeping Bent inaugural flight - A Leap Into The Void (bent 001). Rarely had Glasgow's chattering classes looked so terrified, seemingly frozen by the white glare of The Leopards frenetic performance.
The Leopards finally unleashed the long hard ride into the darkness that is their debut long player - They Tried Staying Calm. This follows their contribution to Creeping Bent Singles Club 1 (split 7" with Adventures In Stereo) and Singles Club 4 (split 7" with Appendix Out).
Two John Peel sessions have been recorded, with John commenting that Mick Slaven was the most exciting guitarist in the country. Can't argue there boss. Recent endeavours have included working with Vic Godard for in a studio and live capacity. The Leopards have also teamed up with Postcard stalwart and original Orange Juice iconoclast James Kirk, working on his debut album which is released on Hamburg's Marina label. Other collaborations have included another Postcard legend Malcolm Ross, doing a few select gigs with Malcolm as his band. The Leopards are currently working on their long overdue 2nd album.
