the recordings
Colditz utilises noises made by instru- ments (piano, percussion, brass, harmonium and cello) as well as noises made by other things (pencils, pins, knuckles, floorboards...) ...)
His tracks are minimalist, elegant and intriguing. The sounds are sometimes quite fractal, but there is a strong compositional element holding the whole thing together.
Track 5 (deranged life) is a cover of Range Life by Pavement. It came about after colditz and Future Pilot AKA were asked to do a cover for a Pavement compilation on Italian label HomeSleep. It bares a vague resemblance to the original, but contains lyrics sung in Punjabi by the pilot-Sushil K Dade.
The rest of .we are animals. was written, produced and recorded by Colditz over a space of two years, some in Salford, the rest in his Ward4 studio in Glasgow.
The Colditz Technique
Any message in the tracks is implicit, He just tries to arrange sounds into an intriguing shape. Half the sounds are ordered and structured, others are improvised. It is the combination of the two which gives him the unique sound.
.with my music I try to make part of the brain tingle that most people don.t seem to know exists..
Colditz influences
.I try not to be influenced by other music, I just look at the world around me and react to it. It just happens I do this best by arranging sounds..
.I.m intrigued by evolution, how complex results are derived from simple beginnings and how order is a result of chaos..
.The title .we are animals. comes from the fact that society in general forgets that we are all animals. Just because we have a different way of doing things to other life forms, doesn.t
necessarily mean we.re doing it better..

For the last year Colditz has contributed to
the sounds of Future Pilot AKA. Having
recorded, drummed on, arranged horn parts
and co-produced the Pilot.s almost finished
new album, In a Military Style. (out
sometime on geographic).
